What Are They?
By necessity, roofs will often extend outward past the walls of a home. This overhang goes by a few names, including eaves or rafters. The underside of this overhang is known as the soffit.
Roofs without overhangs do not have soffits. Older homes may feature soffits as decorative elements, while other structures utilize soffits to conceal things such as plumbing, HVAC ducts or structural beams.
While soffits come in aluminum and wood, they are commonly made of vinyl for optimal durability. Soffits can be vented to maximize airflow, although this isn’t always the case. Continuous or non-vented soffits work best when roofs have narrow eaves or if you need to adequately ventilate a larger area of attic space. Vented panels work better for wider eaves and smaller amounts of attic space since they have smaller vents set between solid panels.
Why They’re Needed

While secondary, aesthetics are also important. A soffit provides an attractive finished appearance for the exterior of a home. Without them, the rafters would essentially make up the underside of the roof’s overhang. Available in a range of materials and colors, soffits also come in various styles including wood-grain and smooth finishes. Soffits can be virtually any color, but homeowners generally prefer white or a color that matches the surrounding trim.
It’s generally best to choose a soffit that matches or complements the rest of a home’s exterior to ensure a cohesive look. For instance, if you’re adding fiber cement siding with a nice wood-grain finish, you should consider a fiber cement soffit with a matching wood grain.
